Thanks to Joel Byars for picking up my inquiry and expertly running with the line of questioning with thoughtful follow-ups. Thus, I’ve always referred to Jon Reep as my “Patient Zero” of the Gator Growl comedians project. I’d have to explain why once upon a time up to 75,000 people would gather in a college football stadium to be entertained by the hottest stand-up comedian the student-run organization could invite. Joel’s reaction told me general audiences wouldn’t know what the entire Gator Growl phenomenon entailed. I’ll bet if I tracked down as many as I could, it could make a great history of stand-up comedy unto itself.” “Thirty-five thousand? Good night!”Īs Jon and Joel moved on and fielded the next question, that’s when it dawned on me: “No one ever asks these comedians about what it was like to do Gator Growl. When Jon mentions that his audience that night was about thirty-five thousand people, it was Joel’s turn to have his eyes bug out. It’s actually kind of perfect that Joel misreads it as “Gator Bowl.” That’s how little name recognition there is for one of the great untold stories of stand-up comedy history.
